In addition to her business and media training and credentials, Akua is a trained and experienced musical event performer and instructor. She especially enjoys combining her dramatic acting and musical skills during performances. Since the year 2002, Akua has worked as a part-time music instructor teaching students of all ages and abilities! Akua took her first private music lessons when she was 6 and a half years old, and she completed her first music exam with The Royal Conservatory of Music at the age of 9. Akua has completed numerous RCM piano, voice (singing), and theory examinations as a child and as an adult, and she has helped several students complete their piano, vocal, and theory exams as well. Akua learned to play the flute during her middle school and high school years in order to complete her school music credits at the time. Although Akua no longer plays the flute, she still has a strong fondness for the instrument!
Some of Akua's earlier music instructors include Madeline Maltby, Karyn Fong, Elsa Hsieh, and Lloyd Werner. Akua has studied advanced level piano and advanced level voice with instructor Abigail Freeman, and she has also studied advanced level music theory with instructor Stephan Tan. Akua has been honoured to be accompanied by adept pianists Karen Mark, Sherry Chang, and Heather Campbell during some of her vocal performances.
Akua has participated in numerous music festivals and she has won some performance awards through those venues. Some of Akua's piano and vocal students have also won awards in music festivals, as well as achieving great results for their music examinations. Akua is an encouraging instructor who enjoys teaching students to learn the contemporary and classical music that they are interested in learning. She only teaches students who are willing to learn and who do not display "diva behaviour." Akua can often be found playing piano and singing songs from all genres; pop, folk, classical, praise and worship, romantic, baroque, Broadway showtunes, r & b, jazz, rock, and much more. She has a special place in her heart for country music, and often, happy tears stream down Akua's face as she performs piano and vocal country music due to the deep emotions that country music evokes in her heart.
