Having an online date can be fun for singles as well as helpful for figuring out whether or not to take the next step with someone.  Meeting people online via a profile set up on a dating website or a social media site is something that many people are used to doing.  However, it is truly rare for a man and a woman to have their first date with each other through an Internet video service.     
Can this unconventional method of getting to know someone truly work?  Yes, it can, and here are some reasons why virtual dates can work well for you:I am a big believer in arranging to meet face to face soon after establishing a romantic connection with someone online.  There simply is no reason to waste time putting off planning a date when you know that you have an interest in someone.  It is best to test compatibility as soon as possible so that you do not waste your time wondering if things would work between you two.  However, some people like to take things slow, and because of that, they resist setting up a face to face date.    

A virtual first date will give you a chance to get to know the person who you are interested in dating while being in a safe space.  Simply set up a time to meet, book the date in your calendar, wear an impressive looking top and you can choose to be relaxed about what kind of pants you wear.  After all, you will pretty much be seeing each other from the waist up, so it really does not matter if you want to wear a comfy pair of sweatpants while on your online date. 

Giving your virtual date a theme will help to make the experience seem more realistic.  If you are having your virtual date on a Saturday afternoon during lunch time, it would be fun to coordinate your beverage and meal choices with your date.  You can have a virtual spaghetti and wine date where you both each make sure that you have your pasta dish and glass of wine nearby as you munch on your meals and get to know each other.  

You wouldn’t allow outside interruptions to stop you from enjoying yourself during an in-person date, and you similarly should not allow outside distractions to keep you from focusing on your virtual date.  Treat your virtual date with seriousness, and do not check your cellphone for text messages or scroll through your social media feed while you are on your date.  Instead, arrange a set virtual meeting time with your date and determine how long you want your date to last.  It is best to have at least a 30 to 60 minute first virtual date. When the agreed upon end time of your virtual date is up, your date is over.  By the end of your time spent together online, you will know whether or not you want to plan an in-person date with each other.  

Make sure that you remain true to yourself and enjoy your time during your virtual date. Smile and make eye contact through the camera lens.  The virtual date is the perfect opportunity to discover each of your favourite types of restaurants, favourite local community hangout places, and where to have your first in person date.
