Why Some Couples Opt for Commitment Ceremonies

Marriage has existed since the beginning of time, and it is a tradition that will probably continue until the end of time. In the future, it might seem crazy that certain groups (interracial couples, gay couples, etc.) were not legally allowed to marry whoever they wanted. Although legal marriages are still taking place in spite of the high divorce rates, there are reasons why some couples prefer to celebrate their unions with commitment ceremonies instead of legal marriages.
- Financial reasons. Money and estate planning are common reasons why senior citizens choose not to legitimize their new relationships. Many seniors have already been married, and they may prefer not to get re-married so that their pensions aren’t affected, especially if they receive spousal pension benefits from their deceased spouses. Some people lose out on earning pensions if they get remarried legally. For this reason, an increasing amount of clergy are willing to perform ceremonies for people who want to declare their love for each other in front of family and friends but don’t want to involve the law and government.
- Privacy. Some people are very private about their relationships and they don’t want to invite their local governments to have authority over their unions. A commitment ceremony is another way for a crazy in love couple to publicly declare their devotion for each other and celebrate with family and friends.
- Beliefs. Two people may be in love with each other, but their faith beliefs might be totally different. Instead of agonizing over whether to hold a wedding in a church, a synagogue, a temple, or a mosque, a non-religious commitment ceremony might be more appealing and lead to more peace and less fighting. Total bliss!
- Free from formality. Don’t get me wrong; I love performing on stage, dressing up, and making my hair and makeup look as pretty as possible. But the idea of planning a large wedding ceremony and reception where I’d be stared at and judged on every single detail is NOT appealing to me. Commitment ceremonies can be as formal or as informal as the couple want. Technically, weddings can also be as formal or informal as the couple wants, but a small and meaningful commitment ceremony might help introverted men and women feel more comfortable than a large wedding ceremony.
A commitment ceremony can be beautiful and heart-warming. You won’t get a marriage certificate, but you and your sweetheart can have custom-made certificates done through organizations like Union of Love in commemoration of your ceremony date.
